GW Effects: Detector # 15

( 4-29-1985 )

A. Toy Motor (motor effects, shielded motor)

(1) Through 3/4" plywood bench top
a. No interface: definite coupling to Det.

b. 1/16” Aluminum interface: attenuated

c. 1/16” Steel interface: attenuated more

d. 1/64” Magnetic shield: attenuated between (b) and (c)

2. Conclusions:
a. Magnetic and GW effects are both present.

b. Aluminum attenuates GW but not magnetic

c. Steel attenuates both (most strongly)

d. Magnetic shield attenuates magnetic strongly but not GW as much as thicker materials.

B. Toy Motor Orientation

(1) Motor vertical: poorest pick-up

(2) Rotor at right angles to pick-up

(3) Rotor parallel to pick-up capacitor, best pick-up.
